PhD student computer science, specialisation 'human-computer
interaction' and cartography

http://www.uhasselt.be/vacancies_detail?taal=04&vacid=406

Background: www.uhasselt.be/edm

Task description: Recent controversies surrounding mobile maps have
highlighted the importance of cartography to human-computer
interaction (HCI) and information visualization on mobile devices.
However, despite the prominent role of “map apps”, they have not yet
been robustly examined with a lens informed by the decades of relevant
research in the field of cartography. Moreover, principles and best
practices established cartography have largely not been integrated
with the work of “GeoHCI” and Geo UX researchers and practitioners.

Within the one-year scholarship we want you to conduct the first
robust survey of mobile map cartography and interaction design with a
focus on identifying the predominant cartographic problems in popular
map applications for mobile devices. Drawing on the well-established
literature of academic cartography and research in mobile HCI, you
will then identify, and implement, and evaluate potential solutions.
Profile

- The candidate is interested in maps, cartography and spatial information.
- The candidate has knowlegde of software development on the Android
OS for mobile devices.
- The candidate has knowlegde of / experience with usability design,
preferentially on mobile devices.
- The candidate has a real research interest and a very good knowledge
of English.
- As the HCI research in EDM is strongly software oriented, the
successful candidate should have solid knowledge of and experience
with software development.
- Enthusiastic applicants with excellent study results are invited to apply.
- Successful applicants have a keen interest in the HCI-research
topics at EDM and can work independently as well as in team.

Diploma: Candidates should have a master degree in computer science, a
civil engineer degree in computer science or equivalent. Students, who
will complete these studies during the spring/summer, are also invited
to apply.

Employment: The scholarship is supported by a Google Research Award.
Google Research Awards consist one-year gifts to universities to
support the work of world-class full-time faculty members at top
universities around the world. So this is a unique opportunity to be
part of this research. If no additional funding is acquired, EDM is
guaranteed to provide funding for a scholarship for four years, either
through its own resources or through structural funding of the
institute.
