Dear Colleagues,

We are looking for a postdoctorial Research Officer (RO) or Research
Project Support Officer (RPSO) (without phd) to work at the School of
Computer Science, Bangor University, UK, for up to 12 months on an UK
AHRC Research Council, funded project titled “Alternative Views on the
lost heritage of Gwynedd”.

To apply, and to read further details, goto http://jobs.bangor.ac.uk/,
perform a Keyword search of job Number BU00138.

The project is a collaboration between the School of Computer Science,
Bangor University (Dr Jonathan C Roberts), the School of History, Welsh
History and Archaeology, Bangor University (Prof. Ray Karl), the
Department of Computer Science, Aberystwyth University (Dr. Bernie
Tiddeman) and Gwynedd Archaeological Trust (Mrs Emily Bateman). Dr.
Jonathan C. Roberts and Professor Ray Karl of Bangor University lead the
project.

The successful applicant will be located in Bangor and will report to
Dr. Jonathan C. Roberts. The RO/RPSO position is available for upto 12
months and the successful candidate will be expected to start as soon as
possible.

Computer photogrammetry techniques have advanced enough to utilise
multiple 2D photographs of the same object, building or environment,
perform a registration of them and calculate a 3D model from the 2D
photos. This project will create 3D models from the photographs in the
archives and allow users to navigate and view these 3D scenes. The focus
is on an image archive of Gwynedd Archaeological Trust (GAT),
photographs that were taken many years ago, and not for the purpose of
creating a 3D picture. Many of the photographs depict assets that have
long disappeared, or excavations that have been built upon. We will also
elicit stories from public engagement and collate information on these
pictures. Therefore, we will present alternative views on the lost
heritage of Gwynedd: including 2D pictures, interactive 3D models,
stories and interpretations of the heritage asset, and where appropriate
3D physical models printed through rapid prototyping techniques.

The post holder will join the team investigating and researching
photogrammetry, searching archives for suitable historic records to be
processed, creating the 3D models from selected photographs, working
with the local community to continue with 3D photogrammetry creation and
gathering stories, creating material for an exhibition, and
assist/organise a workshop and exhibition. In particular the RPSO/RO
should enthusiastically contribute to significant technical advances and
novel directions in their scientific investigation and will actively
take part and assist/lead the development of research publications (at
high impact publication venues), a workshop and exhibition of the
project. The appointee is expected to attend conferences, visit partner
institutions and give seminars and conference presentations.

Applicants should have a good first degree and/or Masters or PhD level
qualifications and experience in heritage, archaeology, virtual reality,
visualization and/or computer graphics. They will require the enthusiasm
and drive to assist/carry-out high quality research in an exciting,
highly professional, multidisciplinary environment. The successful
candidate will work closely with established researchers within Bangor
and Aberystwyth Universities and the partner institution trust.

The successful candidate will be appointed on either Grade 6 or Grade 7
dependent on qualifications and experience and the salary and job
description will be matched accordingly.

Informal enquires should be addressed to Dr. Jonathan C. Roberts, School
of Computer Science, Bangor. Email: j.c.roberts@bangor.ac.uk. Further
particulars are available on request.

Closing date for applications: 31 January 2013

Committed To Equal Opportunities

Best regards
Jonathan
