The Project:
This research project is a collaboration between UEA.s colour group
and Buhler-Sortex. The latter company makes optical sorting machines
which in real time sort food produce e.g. peanuts from stones and other
defects. In the blink of an eye, the aim is to detect and then eject
defects from a stream of product.
There are many candidate solutions to discriminating produce from defect
and this project will consider tailoring colour and texture based
classifiers [1] to this task. There are two further drivers of our
research. First, we seek algorithms that run in real-time and second,
we seek recognition rates as near perfect as possible (for the Sortex
application, rejecting even 1% of true produce would be an unacceptably
high attrition rate).
UEA & Sortex have pioneered the use of a localised model of colour-texture
for sorting applications. This localised model provides good
recognition/discrimination performance and can also be implemented to run
fast. Yet, as a model it is not discriminative enough for a number of food
sorting applications. In the proposed research we will consider extending
the model to operate on more salient features (e.g. [2]) and also consider
how to better train the classifiers e.g. specifically, to be able to
accurately account for unusual colour-texture features . e.g. the defects .
even though these, statistically, are relatively rarely occurring [3].
The successful candidate will be based in the Colour lab at the University
of East Anglia but will meet regularly with colleagues at Sortex in London.
It is expected that the student will work at Sortex during one summer as an intern.
Entry Requirements:
First degree (2:1) in Computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering or
other numerate discipline. All candidates should have programming experience.
Funding:
This 3 year studentship funded by the Faculty of Science and Buhler Sortex
Ltd. Due to funding restrictions funding is available to EU applicants only.
An annual stipend of 13,863 will be available to the successful candidate.
